International Women’s Day is a day that celebrates the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women. At Something Different, we believe that it’s important to offer a working environment where women’s careers thrive and where past and future achievements are celebrated. Around 70% of management roles at Something Different are held by women, and we are proud to offer flexible working for all of our team members.

To celebrate International Women’s Day and to promote a world that is diverse and inclusive, and is free of bias and stereotypes, some of our female managers discuss the importance of the day, their inspirations and how to be successful.

Meet Jane, our CEO & Managing Director

Tell us a bit about yourself…
I started SDW and grew it from car boot sales to a multimillion-pound company. As a dyslexic with no formal business training, I have learnt how to run a business through trial and error treating every mistake as an opportunity to learn. I have met many biases on my journey, but they have served to make me more determined! It’s been a long tough road but facing every challenge with no previous knowledge can often spark fresh inspiration.
Which women inspire you the most?

Harriette Tubman was born into slavery in 1822 in Maryland USA. Beaten and whipped by her “owners” from age 4 she eventually escaped to Philadelphia in her early 20’s by walking the 150 miles under cover of darkness. She then risked her life over 19 times by going back to get firstly every member of her own family and then other slaves enabling them to live a free life.

She then travelled to New York, Boston, and Washington to speak in favour of women’s rights and became one of the founders of the women’s suffrage movement.

How can we encourage more women to pursue senior leadership roles in their careers?

Equal opportunities for all should be supported, fostering inclusive environments, and offering mentoring and professional development opportunities as well as addressing any conscious or unconscious biases. Anyone from any background with the right mindset can achieve greatness, it’s not talent its grit and determination that gets you there.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #InspireInclusion. What does that mean to you?

The term #InspireInclusion makes me feel that inspiration comes from working with a diverse group of people. Listening to the perspective of a group of people of mixed gender, race, sexual orientation, ethnicity, background and level of education will inevitably spark inspiration.

I firmly believe that our vision needs to be equality for all.

Meet Nia, our Head of Marketing

Tell us a bit about yourself…

My name is Nia Johnston and I am Head of Marketing at SDW. I have worked here for 8.5 years and have been a part of the extraordinary growth of the business. Prior to that I had a career in Advertising in London working on large established brands.

Which women inspire you the most?

I am inspired by many women for many different reasons. Early on in my career as a new recruit in the fast-paced advertising industry, one of the senior female managers took me under her wing and taught me everything I needed to know at the time to excel in my role. Her willingness to share her learnings and coach me in the role set the foundation for my professional development. Her approach to work, prioritising mentorship and growth, continues to shape how I interact with my colleagues today

My best friend’s story is another source of inspiration for me. Facing potential burnout from her demanding job in London, she made the bold decision to pivot entirely, transitioning from a secure, high-paying position to the uncertainties of starting her own wellness and yoga practice. Although the road was not entirely smooth, today she runs a thriving business whilst achieving the work-life balance she always sought. Whilst taking a huge leap into the unknown she never lost sight of her end goal. Her story motivates me to persevere and remain focused.

I am inspired by the go-getters and the achievers. The ones who chase their dreams, never give up on their ambitions, and strive to reach their goals.

How can we encourage more women to pursue senior leadership roles in their careers?

I believe that self-confidence hinders many women from progression in more senior roles. Building confidence and maintaining a clear vision for future ambitions are critical steps for personal development. Providing access to strong female role models and mentorship programs can be a powerful way to support this and encourage women to pursue leadership pathways.

I also believe that the availability of leadership training programs plays a crucial role in preparing women for senior roles. These courses can provide valuable skills and practical toolkits to empower women to step into leadership positions with confidence. Finally, seeing women in leadership roles in organisations and promoting from within can really inspire other women to aim for the top. It shows success is possible and reinforces the possibility of achieving similar goals.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #InspireInclusion. What does that mean to you?

Throughout my career, I have been lucky enough to work alongside strong and confident women who have not only inspired my personal development but have also played a pivotal role in shaping my future both personally and professionally. To me, inspire inclusion is adopting a pro-active approach to ensure everyone, not just women, feels valued and has access to opportunities with a strong support network to champion them as they work towards their goals.

Meet Harriet, our Dropship Marketing Manager

Tell us a bit about yourself…

I’m 35 and live in Carmarthenshire with my husband and three children. I originally studied International Travel and Tourism Management in university but soon after leaving I had an opportunity to work in the marketing department for a boutique hotel and never looked back. I’ve now been working in marketing for over 15 years.

Which women inspire you the most?
I’ve always admired Karen Brady for being so cool, calm and collected, when she speaks people really listen. I’ve always been so impressed by the legacy of pilot Amelia Earheart who had such a big dream and chased it with such determination. Thinking about it encourages me to stop and think if I could make my work any better.
How can we encourage more women to pursue senior leadership roles in their careers?

By providing opportunity to gain experience – whether it’s a project or a problem which needs to be solved, I think gaining experience helps to build confidence, so women feel equipped to grow into more senior positions. Access to training and providing time to learn and develop is also important. It’s easy to fall into everyday routines and stop learning or looking for new ways to do things. It could even be something as simple as listening to a podcast or joining a webinar.  Some women may also choose to start a family and I think offering flexibility with working patterns can really make a difference so women can continue to work and develop their career without feeling like they’ve lost momentum in the workplace.

This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #InspireInclusion. What does that mean to you?

To me it means everyone is important! We all have different skills, abilities and knowledge and by bringing more people together from all different walks of life will help to inspire new ideas and ways of thinking.

Meet Rebecca, our Buying Manager

Tell us a bit about yourself…
I joined Something Different Wholesale over 8 years ago as a Purchasing Assistant, after starting my Buying career in the Fashion industry. I quickly developed a passion for Giftware and continued to develop my career within the company as a Buyer before progressing to Buying Manager. My passion for what I do drives me to inspire my team to strive to deliver successful product ranges for the business. I take pride in developing new products for our customers whilst supporting the company’s vision to succeed.
Which women inspire you the most?
There are so many powerful role models for aspiring female entrepreneurs and business leaders, and I am very fortunate to work with a team of talented, dedicated and inspirational women and have huge admiration for our CEO who inspires me daily.
How can we encourage more women to pursue senior leadership roles in their careers?
By creating a supportive and inclusive work environment, to encourage individuals to feel empowered to be able to voice their ideas, take risks and showcase their talent. Provide an opportunity for networking and developing skills through training, mentorship, or webinars so people have the skills and drive to succeed.
This year’s International Women’s Day theme is #InspireInclusion. What does that mean to you?

To inspire inclusivity and diversity where everyone is valued, respected, and encouraged to celebrate everyone with no boundaries.
