Behind the Scenes - Making Wood Carvings

Learn more about how our wood carved wall plaques are made in these behind the scenes photos.
Back at Spring Fair we showcased one of our newest ranges arriving this year which was a selection of hand carved wooden plaques. After much anticipation we're delighted to say that the plaques have now arrived and are available in a variety of sizes and designs which include angels, wolves, hares and the Green Man. Each of these items is handmade in Indonesia and because they are carved by hand in natural materials is means that each and every one is unique - something which is quite special in our industry!
The plaques are made from wooden logs which are harvested and stored, giving them time to dry out. Once the logs are ready they are vertically split in two halves.
A rough outline of the design is drawn in chalk on the bark-covered side of the log (in the picture below you can see the outline of one of our howling wolf designs).
Using hammers and chisels (and incredible precision) the craftsmen create the intricate designs on the wood. Once finished these are then lightly sanded and a layer of protective varnish added.
If you'd like a closer look at the plaques you can find them on our website here.
