If you own a small high street or online shop, you may be wondering whether it’s really worth investing in holiday-themed items every year. Find out why Halloween is not one to miss!

Sometimes it can seem like there’s a new holiday every few weeks. As a retailer, you may be wondering whether it’s really worth investing in a brand new range of products for each and every holiday. While some holidays may prove to be less than impressive when it comes to sales, Halloween is a different story. If you’re still on the fence about whether it’s really worth selling Halloween-themed products, here are four reasons why you should definitely consider it.

Halloween sells!

Compared to other holidays, Halloween has been proven to be one of the most popular for consumers. Whether it’s costumes, decorations or treats, retailers consistently meet with success at Halloween time. In America, consumers seem to be obsessed with the holiday. According to the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics, Americans spent over $9.1 billion on Halloween-related items in 2017 — and that number is rising! So, it only makes sense to hop on the bandwagon and make the most of it.

Clearly, the holiday is a billion dollar industry across the pond — but what about here in the UK?

Halloween is becoming more and more popular in the UK

Traditionally, Halloween was always considered to be a pretty American holiday. Back in the day, it was unusual to see many children out and about trick-or-treating on October 31st. And Halloween decorations? The most we’d see would be a few pumpkins dotted around the neighborhood.

However, these days, Halloween has become increasingly popular in the UK. In 2014, The Smithsonian pointed out that the holiday was quickly overtaking Guy Fawkes night — in fact, many people had begun to combine the two events for one big spooky party. Sales of Halloween related products had also risen by 12% from 2012 to 2013

Halloween is all about decorating

Halloween is one of those holidays that kind of revolves around decorating. So, anyone who celebrates the spooky day is sure to be on the lookout for cute or scary Halloween decorations and accessories to create an eerie atmosphere both inside and outside of the home.

Halloween falls at a convenient time of year for retailers

As the season changes and you start to bring in your fall collection, you can also bring in Halloween pieces and give your store a complete new revamp for the season. It's also a great build-up to the busy festive period. You may even want to display your Christmas lines as retail researchers are finding that consumers are buying for Christmas even earlier than normal than year so it's a great opportunity to get a bigger piece of the pie.

Tips on making the most of Halloween as a retailer

  • Get your products on display at least a month in advance
  • Create a spooky window design to intrigue passersby
  • Invest in a range of products — candles, decorations, costumes, and so on
  • Try to go against “traditional” products and stock some contemporary or unusual Halloween items too
  • Decorate the shop with a few of your products to show customers what they look like “in action”
  • Get involved yourself and dress up - it'll certainly make you more memorable to new customers!
